Time spent out of their cage.

I have two cockatiels, one male and one female. They want to spend as little time in their cage as possible and will make as much racket as they can to get their way. Is this a problem for others? I am not crazy about letting them have the freedom to just be free and go anywhere in here as they choose. Unfortunately this is how it's been here for quite some time. I'm wondering now if it's too late to change this.

If I am home, I had my cockatiel out. The only time she was left in her cage was when I was gone, or at bedtime. And she always knew the moment I got home because she would get quite loud to be let out. Mine had her wings clipped and really didn't adventure far. She stayed in the living room - where her cage was, or would venture to the kitchen/dining room area - close to where my parakeets are kept. Other than that she stayed on top of her cage where she has a playgym - well, when she wasn't riding on me. I think most tiels would prefer out of cage time, although I wish we could diaper them! Mine pooped constantly and I was constantly cleaning up her messes!

Perhaps try starting a routine.. they come out at a certain time, then go back in at a certain time, they should eventually get used to the routine and know when they're aloud to come out and have to go back in. But it just sounds like any other Cocktiel, a lot of them prefer to be out of the cage rather then in it.. they get to spread their wings and have freedom, they can't do that much in a cage.

Mine are out for about 2-3hrs a day total depending.

and I only let them out when they are calm/quiet.... if they are being noisy I completely ignore them.

Holly flock calls like mad every time the door is open... I have to wait to tell her "hello, yes- I'm home" Until she settles. Hopefully she'll catch on that she gets attention when she is calm soon. Been working hard on it, but my kids are sabotaging me!

Mine are out in the early morning while I get ready for work. I bribe them back in with millet and they have actually gotten so they will go in and wait for it(sometimes). Sometimes I let them hang out on top of their cage all day but the room is pretty much bird-proofed. If they haven't been out all day I let them out again at night too for awhile. Again I use food to bring them back into the cage-usually their evening meal. They have just had their wings clipped for the first time in their lives so all this is pretty new. Before, when they were flighted they flew anywhere they wanted so it was dangerous to leave them out, not to mention a pain in the neck because they clung to me and I could not come and go without having to try and get them back in their cages so I wouldn't walk out the door with a tiel on my shoulder by mistake. Now life is simpler because althought they can fly a little bit, its hard work for them and they only do so every so often. I can walk in and out and they will talk to me but not leave the cages or table, where ever they happen to be...

mine are usually out from 7 am to 9 pm every day and they do a good job at entertaining their selfs, they play together, or alone, they go back in their cage to eat/drink and nap or they'll nap where ever they're sitting at the time

they have an entire room just for them So there is nothing harmful to them in it. and they love being out. and playing.

they need out of cage time no matter what size cage they're in it is not healthy for them physically or mentally to be caged all day every day

As others have said, it's vitally important that your birds get out of cage time. I understand how difficult it can be when you're busy, but you need to make time every day to do this. If you get your birds on a schedule (like taking them out right when you get home from work, then once more before bed, something like that) you'll probably find that they're calmer.

Echo demands to be let out ALL of the time, so I give her as much out of cage time as I can. Halley on the other hand actually enjoys being in his cage. Yes, he loves to come out too, but he doesn't mind going back...unlike Echo, who will run up your arm to avoid it! :p

Mine are out when i'm up ( 6 am usually) and here, but are only too happy to "Go bed" about 6pm or so,

jump on top of there cage

a last snack mainly steamed rice and greens

and off we go into the other room riding the cage

when they get to there stand and the doors reopened

in they climb, a last snack on seeds while i put the covers on,

out raising trouble every chance they get when up though
