I am curious, does my cockatiel know when I have been gone for several hours?

Definitely! I had to leave my cockatiel at the vet for boarding over the weekend a couple of weeks ago. When I went to pick him up, he started flock calling and wolf whistling like crazy as soon as he heard my voice. 
They bond pretty closely to us, so they definitely know when we've been gone awhile.
