Just today, Stormy has started doing something rather odd when I pet her (almost positive on gender) for an extended period of time. Stormy will become perfectly straight, crest will flatten out, wings will be out slightly will flap slowly, and she will make a funny chirping sound. I cant find the sound on Youtube and its hard for me to film it when I'm petting.

Any idea on whats going on?

is it like soft cheaping?? Are you petting her back? i read about petting a cockatiels back if it is female it stimulates a boy mounting her... Wendy does that when i pet her back... she makes these soft cheaps

Ohhh..is she cooing? Luna coos when i scratch his head. I won't see him for a couple days because he is staying at my boyfriend's but I can video his cooing and see if this is like what Sunny is doing. It is the lower back where females usually get mounted on by the males. So if you're petting the upper back, neck, and face she is probably just cooing..making happy cockatiel sounds.

It's a girl and you're petting her back? This would stimulate her as if a male was stepping onto her back to mate with her. Look up mating cockatiels on youtube and see if this soft chirping is similar to what she is doing.

It still sounds like mating behavior to me. Roo will do this to me sometimes when I haven't even touched her. Her version of it sounds a little like she's trying to imitate human kissing noises. I call it clucking, although it sounds nothing like what you'd expect from a chicken. Does that sound more like it?

If you think it seems hormonal, then it probably is. This is how I originally realized that Roo is a hen.

Touching any part of a hens back can stimulate her, I had a hen where all I had to do was scratch her head and she would go into mating mode, that's how hormonal she was. If you don't want her to lay eggs (as that's what this is stimulating) it would be best to stop it.

Hang on, I was able to record it, got the sound not sure how much else I got as well. I also tried to get a shot of the tail feathers. Note: Stormy was hatched in April and finally appears to be going into a molt. Give me a few seconds to upload it somewhere.

Actually when in breeding mode some females tend to lose feathers and get new feathers. i have heard of it before! more often in the larger finches but it has happened to my friends tiel, she freaked out thinking her bird was sick and turns out she was just hormonal hahah

hahaha lol! she just loves you dosn't she LOL!!!!
Just give her less light during the day, meaning cover her until about 10:00am and cover her at night when you are making dinner(around6:00 PM) do this every day if you can. it should discourage some of this behavior..
