Can cockatiels eat tomatoes?
There is contradicting information out there on the web. So I just want to be sure.
I just bought the Just Veggies bucket from Just Tomatoes and it has tomatoes in it.
Thanks!:tiel3:

On the Feeding Feathers Yahoo group at http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/FeedingFeathers/ they recommend feeding tomatoes only occasionally (fruit only, no leaves or stems). Their position is that tomatoes are safe but they're a member of the nightshade family which is not considered to be the greatest thing in the world for birds. How valid is this advice? I don't know, but they're usually reasonable over there.

The Just Veggies products that my tiels absolutely LOVE: peas, corn, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, pomegranate. With the fruit, it's the little seeds that they love and not the fruit itself.

Both the aviaries I worked for allowed for tomatoes, but only maybe a 1/4 in slice of a roma once a week for big birds, and a couple small diced chunks for a flight of smaller birds like finches. One of them also gave a small spoonful of freshly made salsa, with fruits like mangoes, apples, and peaches mixed in. There would be corn, tomatoes, small bits of peppers, a tiny bit of onion, and mostly fruit. It was more of a chutney. It was also pretty good with fish, ;)

Thanks srtiels. I also got the Just Veggies idea from reading one of your posts on some other thread. I have a hard time providing fresh fruits and veggies so I'm hoping they'll take to the dried stuff. So far Kirby enjoys the corn and peas. Abby has taken more to the fruits (I also bought the Just Fruits bucket). All the things in the Just Fruits bucket are okay right? There's apple, pear, persimmon, and raisins.

Tielfan: Do you buy the individual buckets? Or is there a mix of them that I could get? I don't eat berries but I'd definitely like to provide some to them.

Mentha: thanks for the tips. I love your signature. What kind of birds is that? Is that a button quail?
