A Cockatiel needs adequate space for perching, flapping their wings and walking around. Cockatiels are better off with a cage that is bigger width wise rather than height. Some Cockatiels will spend most of their time sitting on the bottom of the cage, so having a very tall and skinny cage will not fit a Cockatiel's needs. Their tails and wings need to have enough room, so they do not become broken or injured from slamming it on the side of the cage. A square cage is always better than a round one as well. Anything smaller than this could cause problems for your Cockatiel.

Your 'tiel gets lots of out time, so that helps a lot too. I'd recommend if you ever got another cage to get one that's 24"x 22"x 38 or something like that. Your cage isn't really that bad.

The rule of thumb as I see it is get the largest cage you can possibly afford. a smaller cage can actually cause psychological problems for a 'tiel.

I believe I have a Prevue Pet Select 3153 A19 cage. I had to look it up because I have the paperwork "lost" in my house somewhere. This cage appears to be the same model. I was able to come across this cage at my local Petsmart... Got lucky :)

I'm currently shopping for a cage. Does anyone have recommendations for dimensions? I don't need a huge, mammoth cage because I am 80% sure I will only have one tiel at a time, at the MOST two.

Also, if you buy a cage online, how does it ship? Is it disassembled? I live in an apartment building so it would get stuck in the rental office until I picked it up.

The smallest you should get is 30w by 18d by 18h, don't get anything less than that. :D But bigger is always better for your bird(s)! :)

When you order cages online, they come dissassembled, so you will have to put it together yourself. :D There also quite easy to put together. :)

Sarah, here are a couple of options for you. the first company is in Chicago.
http://www.windycityparrot.com/page/Windycityparrot/CTGY/cagesbreed I ordered 2 of the cages at the top of this page. They are a great size and easy to put together. The folks at Windy City Parrot were great to deal with. The cage arrived one day before the date promised. http://www.bird.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=502906+WHT I also have one of these and it is very well built and the addition of the seed catcher makes it easier to keep clean around it.

Sue, I checked out the URL with the cage and it looks great and is a reasonable price! From the picture, the cage doesn't look terrible big but the dimensions are 32L x 24W x 45H! That sounds really big. Is that too much for my little to-be tiel?

The cage should be coming any day now. I looked at the description again to look at the dimensions.

It says:

Overall dimensions are 39.4 Inch L x 39.5 Inch W x 68.5 Inch H. Actual Cage dimensions are 32 Inch L x 24 Inch W x 45 Inch H.

Wait, how could it possibly be 68.5 in high? That is taller than me!

I'm just starting to worry that it's way bigger than it looked in the picture and that it may be too big for my one tiel!
You can NEVER have a cage that is too big. Always try to get the biggest cage you can afford. If you think its big, it will definitely keep him/her happy!
Good luck!

Plus... you'll have room for a possible future friend :p

The actual cage dimensions are: Actual Cage dimensions are 32 Inch L x 24 Inch W x 45 Inch H.
like you said. The added up height is including the stand. It is less than four feet tall.
All you need to worry about is the bar spacing of a cage. That is what limits you to the size. If it is too big the bird's head can get caught in it.
