Hi, my name is steven. I am recently new to your site but not to cockatiels.
I had a Normal(grey) male cockatiel when i was growing up it was hand reared from a baby and was lovely, i no longer have any pictures tho:(

I recently bought two lovely new cockatiels, One wich i assume to be a male silver & the other to be a female Pearl, have had them about a week now, the female pearl came with a few tail feathers missing & look like they have been neglected and i just had to buy them because i couldnt walk away knowing they was like that, Now she has lost/broke all of her tail feathers but shes starting to look abit more healthy. The male silver seems to be in better shape.

I think they was aviary birds but i am looking to train them up so they can fly free around the household. I have no idea how old they both are but i wouldnt say there very old.

If u have any suggestions to there not the breeds/sex to what i think they are please feel free to help me out:)

Anyway enough talk ill upload a few pictures of these beautiful birds:love:

Its actualy a salad bowl, as far as i know? ive just searched on the internet and ive found one the same as mine :) http://www.plentyforpets.com/product_detail.php?product=3030&category=0_184 On most indoor aviarys there is a thing that they actualy clip on, and to put new food ect in it spins round so u can then fill it up from the outside of the cage, there normaly on the side. but they can also be put onto the bars like i have on mine:) this is what they normaly go on http://www.plentyforpets.com/product_detail.php?product=11891&category=0_184

Type Ferplast Bird Feeder Double Trough in on ebay and they should pop up:)

& how old is she now & did it take u long to tame her? mine are still very untame :( still love them though

They said she was a boy and that she was 12 weeks old when i got her but i think she may be a bit older, she is 13-14 months old now, she was the easiest to tame which was a few weeks of getting her, she was not scared of my hands in the first week but still cautious though.

aww bless her :p mine are used to me putting my hand in the cage now as i do so daily to change food water ect. but they still wont let me touch them, bailey was on the side and i got a tiny little bit of a tickle on her chest before she flew off to the otherside so i think there getting used to me

I was ages when she let me give her scritches month or two something like that but she didnt mind stepping up on my hand though. she doesnt let me pet her now since she prefers cookie lol i ask for a kiss though and she gives me one same as cookie.
I got cookie from a breeder though and he was hand reared, little brat he is lol

aww :p only time will tell i guess, ive just seen them bird harness' they look so funny :p i thought it was bizzare for a rabbit to have one lol.

lol yeh i have one which i used a few time but i only can take them out at night as too many cats and people walking the dogs so i dont bother now, i wouldnt trust taking mine outside

Clipping the wings is great to tame them aswell, dont worry they grow back.
I have clipped all of mine and they can fly a bit but not fully, they rely on me to get them where they wanna be and when they are scared while outside of cage they fly at a top speed and fly into the window or walls and hurt themselfs. My kitchen and living room is joined which i had to place net there to stop them going in while cooker is on.
I didnt believe in wing clipping before but now i understand why

Ive heard of that option i know its safe and doesnt hurt the bird id just rather not have it done but thats just my opinion:) i think ill just do it the hard way lol:p, there not finger tame at the moment so i dont want to let them out just incase it stress's them out trying to get them back in later

Only hurt them if you clip to far, but i used a towel when i tamed my budgie when i was little, catch them in a towel and hold for 5 mins and let go

you might have to if they break a blood feather as it needs to be pulled out straight away or it gets infected or bleed to death. Flour will stop the bleeding if you cant find it

Its just different going from having a hand reared baby to untamed birds, you just want to let them out to fly and fuss them ect:(

#73 ยท
hand reared cookie is the brat lol gets his own way and easy to teach him to step up lol
they all come out and fly about so there is really no difference at all

#74 ยท
Just when there hand reared there used to humans and will come to u and go back In the cage easier. With untamed its just the thought of having to forcefully try get them back in

I have no trouble at all with mine getting back in the cage but i admit my other cages dumpling and big mac took ages to get in cage but since i have a parrot cage i have no problems. Big mac (2 years old) and dumpling (3 years old) spent their whole live in a aviary so i don't blame them not liking a smaller cage lol
I always say come on its bedtime before i put them away so they have learnt what bedtime is

So its fine to let them out even tho there not tame? Will it help them bond with me knowing I'm giving them free time to fly around?

We'll they have had a few days to get used to the new cage now. Should i let them out together? If its hard to get them back in catch them with a towel?
