Hey guys so i am thinking of getting another tiel for Aero as a friend to keep him company when im away.He gets alot of time out but there are the odd days where i cant spend as much time with him as i usually do and i feel bad leaving him alone. Also my mom ( and I) really had our hearts set on a male bird because they talk and whistle and i think Aero is a female ( the pet store owner told us he was male but then i found out you cant visually sex lutinos) she doesnt do any male behaviour ( dont get me wrong i love her to pieces no matter the sex) but i would like a male too( there will be no breeding tho)Anyway i would love some feedback about getting a second tiel and i was wondering if Aeros cage is too small for two tiels? I will buy a smaller quarantine cage for the hypothetical new bird. But i just want to run it by you guys because alot of you have way more experience than i do. Im not sure of the dimensions of the cage but i included a picture. Thanks

Hi Sarah,
I used a cage exactly like the one you have as a quarantine cage, and I don't think it's big enough for more than one bird. If you had it open all day and the 'tiels were able to go in and out (and mostly use the cage to sleep) then it would be fine, but I would consider upgrading to a bigger one if they're going to be stuck inside for most of the day.
Best of luck finding a male. :)

Ya well that and quarantine period and the fact that they might not get along is kinda making me think that I should just
buy a seperate cage if I get another bird and put it on the end of my desk cuz I can't fit another cage on a stand in my room but could fit one on the end of my desk. Does that sound like a better plan?

So both my parents have agreed I can get another tiel :D but now I'm faced with convincing my dad to let me get another cage since he believes that I have too many cages in my room already ( 3 reptile tanks, 1 fish tank, and 1 bird cage) but I told him they might fight and I need to quarantine the new bird. Anyway I don't really care about mutation but I'm looking for a male so I might have to go looking for an older bird( after 1st molt)so I know gender for sure. Hopefully I can convince my dad to let me get another cage (y)

Thats great news... you can go to breeders as they should know the sex
When i went to the breeders for cookie he did ask if i wanted a male or female

When i went looking for a first bird i couldnt find a breeder close to me and my parents werent willing to drive far away for a bird so had to get Aero from a pet store which is probably( ill look for more breeders but probably wont find any close to me) where ill get my second bird from.....at around 5 or 6 months do male and female normal greys show different face colours or are they the same that young? Also my dad said he'll think about letting me get another cage more if i clean and declutter my room ( im a bit of a novice hoarder lol) so thats good

hehe my moms still convinced Aeros a boy because the pet store guy told her his face was bright therefore hes a guy no matter now how many times i tell her thats not the case....Aero doesnt beak bang, do heart wings, doesnt care about mirrors ,and is a pretty quiet bird....but she keeps insisting he's too young to learn to talk or whistle ....*sigh* Is it too early to tell by behaviour?

How old is Aero (I probably should know this by now but I can't remember)? Males can be quiet until they reach puberty. Arnie doesn't shut up and will sometimes wolf whistle, she also has bright cheek patches like Aero .. and she's a dna sexed girl... you won't know for certain unless you get a test or maybe until Aero reaches puberty or starts laying eggs?

Yeah she sometimes gets the wolf whistle and sometimes it comes out a bit warped. And she'll only do it if she thinks we're leaving her for the day - it's her "come back, come back! I whistle for you! I whistle now!" call. She also does it when she thinks she's by herself and she practices her chattering which includes some wolf whistling and "hello" which actually sounds like "aero" but it's the same tone as the hello I say to her... She also does a fast monkey call and I have no idea what she's saying or copying then.

Well aero is still young so perhaps one day, he might surprise you by suddently being loud and whistling and chatting, or Aero could be a girl. From Aero's behaviour it sounds like she might be a girl however all tiels are different and sometimes they can be surprising! We thought Arnie was a boy because she acted so butch.

You'll never be sure unless you get a DNA test or after her first molt...trust me. We thought Fuzzy was a girl...Snowball liked "her" and preened "her" all the time. "She" didn't whistle or anything, just sat there quietly making little whispers in my ear. "She" must've been practicing when no one was around because one day out of nowhere, Fuzzy wolf whistled and it all went down hill from there. HE started beak banging and heart wings and the whole lot! Its very rare for girls to sing/talk, so Arnie is a special girl!!!

I don't think it matters, it depends on the individual tiels. If you had another female to compete for there might be problems but they'll probably be friends, you could have a male/girl combo and they might have issues like DallyTsuka's Dally and Tsuka. I'm sure they'll appreciate the company though regardless even if they can't be caged together. But you won't know until the other bird comes along...

Thanks for the help :) I hope if i get a second tiel they become great friends but I'll be glad if they just tolerate eachother lol I think 2 tiels will be so much more fun( although way more poop allover my room to clean) :p

Two of my boys love each other so much that when Snowball and his girl Hershey had a clutch, they let Fuzzy help with the clutch. Then there's Cinnamon who doesn't like the other birds very much, she likes people better! As Belinda says it just depends on the birds!
