Hello,
I have two cockatiels, the pied one is definitely male but the lutino I'm not sure yet. The pied one is starting to initiate beak fights with my lutino if one gets to close to the other. I'm not concerned about it at the moment as the fights, if not broken up, will usually end quickly and no damaged seems to be done. I'm just wondering why my pied boy seems to dislike my lutino getting too close. Does he just like his personal space? I don't think lack of space is the problem, as they're in an aviary, and he also fights when they're out, especially when they're on me. I haven't had him for quite as long as the lutino, there's a few months inbetween the two of them, so is he perhaps jealous of the lutino?
Thanks. 🙂

I’m not sure could also be just personality? Are you always allowed to get close to the pied one? My female cockatiel does not want any human attention while the male one always comes to us. The female one thinks the male one is super annoying and she needs her personal space yet they are bonded and can’t live without each other. She comes to him when she wants scratches or her nose cleaned. Could also be they are fighting over you indeed. As long as it does not escalate I don’t think it’s a problem.

Both of them are always very eager to come to me. The pied one is happy to simply sit on my shoulder while the lutino loves climbing all over and chew on zips etc. If the lutino dares to get close to the pied, the pied will attack. Normally they both stop if I say 'hey.' Maybe it is personality. The pied is definitely a more calm and relaxed bird than must-climb-must-see lutino.

The thing is, the lutino has sung once, probably back in the first month I got it. I know females can sing, though it is more rare, but I haven't heard anything since then. It did learn to whistle a short whistle I often do to let it know I'm coming. It hasn't learnt anything else at all, while the pied sings all sorts of songs nearly everyday and picks up on new tunes quite quickly. Apart from that one time the lutino sang, all the noises it makes now are contact calls, the whistle, screaming for attention and a sort of conversational little chirp.
