So luka my 2-3 months old normal grey split to pied tiel has been flapping his wings ALOT And i mean it. The cage is big enough for him to flap but the problem is he stands on the perch right beside the cage walls and flaps his wings, he also started climbing which is of course a good thing but he has been jumping from the top perch to the floor headfirst, i know he is trying to fly because when i got him he escaped from the cage and he kept flying uncontrollably and going up and kept hitting in the walls and he couldn’t get down, i told my father once he gets used to me i’ll let him out so i could train him to fly but he told me not to teach him how to fly because if i did he would love to fly and wouldn’t stay on my hand when he’s outside the cage and he would fly and to wait until he absolutely gets used to me and loves me. What should i do?

I would say to let him out of the cage because they also need to stretch their wings.

Your dad is partly right. It IS a good thing to bond with Luka before he's out and about too much but you can't expect a bird NOT to fly! That's like telling you that you can't walk. The flapping in his cage is his way of exercising his wings and keeping them fit. How long has he been at your house? It takes time for a bird to learn there surroundings and when he got out, he wasn't use to the layout of the rooms and that's probably why he crashed into things and landed up high because he was scared. Just go easy on him and let things calm down a bit. In time, I'm sure he will sit on your shoulder and head more than you want! LOL!

Yes....I've been in your shoes a number of times getting a stubborn teil back in there cage. There are a numbers of things you can try: If your not in a real hurry, leave his cage door open and put fresh food & water in his cage. Make sure he see's you do that. You can also try millet. VERY few cockatiels will ever turn down a chance at getting there favorite treat! If it's at bedtime your trying to get him in, TRY and make sure you do it as close as possible to the same time every evening so he will get use to a routine. Other than that, it sounds like your making good progress!
