My tiel, Cheeko, has been screaming a lot. This often occurs at all times of the day; after I have trained him, if I'm sitting only a few feet away from him and am talking to him softly, when he's on top of his cage on his play gym. He is not comfortable enough to sit with me or be at a low level of the room yet. He yells loud enough for my eardrums to ring. Usually what happens when he does that is I leave the room and wait for him to be quiet, then I go back in. Maybe a minute will pass and he will start up again. Why is he screeching so much? He has plenty of fresh food and water, and even treats, like chopped-up corn or spinach in his treat dish. He has toys and perches, a bell, a swing and plenty of horizontal bars to climb. No mirrors! My boyfriend and I understand ourselves to be members of his flock and often sit with him in the living room. He is noticeably happy when we are all together in the room. We often talk to him and train him throughout the day, several times a day. I am teacher and I am off for the summer, so when I'm not training him or talking to him, I'm usually just working a few feet away from him on my laptop. He has been trained with a target stick and a clicker so far and always stops this screeching while he is being trained. I read that when a cockatiel yells he is searching for attention or because he is bored or frustrated. What could I be doing wrong?

How many toys do you keep in its cage, and how large is its cage. It can often be bored because it has nothing at all to do. if you have a normal sized cage, I'd say 3-5 toys in it. Maybe try saving up for an even bigger cage and put more toys in, but do not flood it with toys!

This will only make it worse if that happens. :) Cockatiels can be costly birds, just be sure to have the money if you wish to keep him maintained properly.

Cockatiels will do a very loud single syllable yell as a contact call. Apparently he considers you part of his flock. Try saying HI to him when he does it. Either he's looking for you or he's looking for another 'tiel. If you get him a buddy he might be quieter although he will give the contact call if his buddy is out of sight. If his buddy is a girl you will get a whole different kind of noise!

He has a group of colorful rings that he likes to bite, a toy with wood blocks and rope and a bell, a swing and another separate bell toy. So, counting the swing, that's four toys, and he's not crowded. He plays with all of them daily, but by far prefers the toy with wood blocks, rope and a bell. He loves attacking the toy and chirping at it and he also uses it to climb up to his swing, where he uses his tail as a propeller and swings himself back and forth. I'd say he's got a pretty normal sized cage, on the big side. He also has a play gym that he loves. It's on top of his cage for when he comes out so he does have plenty to entertain himself.
