Hi everyone, i was hoping to pick everyone's brains. I bought this Tiel yesterday. We were told it was a male heavy pied, but we are not so sure if it is even male. I thought it looked more like a white faced normal but not really sure. It is a juvenile for sure, we are guessing around 5 months of age. So what do you think?

definately whiteface and pied, but not heavy at all.... you can see Cotton in my sig..well it´s a bit small but you can check my posts to see a bigger pic of him, he´s a whiteface pied.. lot more than yours but still not heavy...I consider heavy pied being to almost having no grey at all.... but thta´s just me...

Cotton also has a grey face but I´m sure he´s male as he sings not like Maui which I also believed was male until I got Cotton and Jack...

so your baby being pied could mean she/he can be any gender unless you DNA test to know for sure or wait and see sex related traits...

Thanks for the reply, we plan on having them DNA tested sometime soon. Right now We are working on getting him/her named and calmed down a bit, very calm in the cage, but out of the cage is a different story lol. He wasnt socialized very much, and was allowed to just fly through the house with several other birds from the person we got them from. I kinda feel we rescued them from a breeder who was way in over her head. But that might just be my opinion, she had a basement full of breeders and fledglings with no cages and upstairs she had at least 20 juvies roaming at will and only about 3 cages. in my opinion it was sad really, because there is no way she had enough time to devote to any one of the birds and their behavior reflects that. I am not saying it was a bird mill, but someone who loved birds and just let it get away from her.

Yes you are right it IS a whiteface. There doesn't appear to be any yellow or orange anywhere on your bird. If your bird IS 5 months it will be no time at all before the birds' sex becomes apparent. If some of the tailfeathers have bars (can't see from the photos) those will be replaced by solid grey feathers at around 6 months.

the only "pied" marking i see on the whole bird is the tick on the back of the head

I had a white face pied and it had blotches of white all over

he's the one on the door

looks more like a white face split to pied to me

But they don't normally get their adult "face" til i think 6 months so it may be a female white face split to pied

my daughters female white face had a huge white tick on the back of her head for being split to pied.

Definitely whiteface, as others have said. Pied but not heavy pied, since that means the bird has more white than grey. Light pied is more like it, or maybe even split pied. Most splits don't show themselves but a pied split can show itself in just a few light-colored feathers on the back of the head, which I think is called a "pied patch". I'm no expert but I think the amount of white on your bird's head could be more than just a pied patch, so my vote is for light pied.

I'd say Whiteface split to Pied too. It looks like, aside from the normal white markings, the only white marking is the large patch on the back of the head, which is indicative of being split to pied.

Gorgeous bird :)
