Please help - I'm trying to buy a female bird for my daughter's birthday tomorrow :)wacko:) and I have found one through a breeder that is a whiteface pearl pied. I have been told that because only the father carries the pearl gene it is definitely female.

I have been trying to figure out cockatiel genetics but I'm stumped on the whole matter. I'm hoping someone here has a better handle on the sex-linked genes... and can let me know if I should go ahead and buy this bird!

Thanks VERY much!

Hi there welcome to the forum :) Pearl is a sex linked mutation so yes if only the father carries the pearl then all babies will be female, a female can not be split to Pearl, the mother has to visually be a pearl, hope this helps.

I was helped out with this type of problem by Allen he gave me this great web site. kristenmunson.com/cockatiels/blue.html you can put in what the male and female are and it will tell you what the babies should be. I know you have the bird now and I think it should be a female too. But I thought you might like to go look.
