So after the discussion of Lacewing earlier today I snapped a few shots of Patches, our WF pearl hen. She's 8yrs old and as many know came from a pretty rough home (abusive mate, lived in a room full of macaws with open cages). But I believe she is a Lacewing and I just thought I would share. I love this pattern, its my absolute favorite. The flash scares the crap outta her but she did well for our picture session. I'm not pushing her, she needs lots of love and patience and even if she's never super cuddly, she's got a safe home here (I'm scared of macaws too.)

And macaws are the one bird that just doesn't love me. I've had ONE good experience with a severe macaw, all the rest trick me to trying to touch them, thankfully I move quicker than them or I might be missing a finger or two.

She is gorgeous and I love her pattern. I did notice she has one partial pearled feather on her right side. It looks solid with a white spot on it....interesting.

She grew new feathers back in on her wings, she had bald spots from where I'm assuming either her and her mate plucked her at. She is quite the specimen.

I'm curious what is the genetic difference between lacewing and pearl? I've heard the terms are interchangeable.

I have never heard of Lace Wing, no surprise since I am still new to all the genetics, I am assuming that it is a different kind of Pearl pattern? Do you have the link to the original post?

http://talkcockatiels.com/showthread.php?t=29780 We got a little off-topic but it came up because my father-in-law bred two of his birds, and one of the pearl babies ended up being a Lacewing. Apparently, its a form of pearl, kind of like how PF is a form of WF. Srtiels gave great instructions on how to breed for it and if I were to ever get my hands on another Lacewing hen (I wont breed Patches, she's an older hen and she's needs to just spend the rest of her life being happy) I would definitely breed for it.

Thank you, I agree. I don't think she'll ever be fully tame, she's very skittish and my hubby says when he went to get her the woman grabbed her out of the cage. She bites but not very hard and she steps up when she feels like it. I only really grab her if its bedtime and most of the time I can get her to step up for me. She likes my hubby a lot which I attribute to it being a woman that was her previous owner lol.

Interesting link, thanks Roxy. Am I mistaken to believe that Lace Wing is like reverse Pearling? The edges are lacking pigment instead of the center?

I was wandering the same thing because originally that's what I thought Patches was. I thought she was a reverse pearl. I don't know the difference between the two unless Lacewing is as its name suggests and is only on the wing?

From the picture srtiels posted, a lacewing just has more if the colorless pearl part going to the shaft of the feather, and less of the normal coloring. It looks like it's scalloped with a faint outline. Almost like a silver lining on a cloud.
