So, I am a new bird owner and just got an eight week old cockatiel yesterday. We named him Marnie. He was parent raised, so he’s not used to human. If we sit next to the cage, he’s fine. But I tried to give him some spray millet and he took a couple nibbles but then starts to freak out. So, I stop. What’s the best way to tame this little guy? Thanks so much for your help in advance!
The earlier, the better. You need work with him everyday for a while. At 8 weeks, cockatiel is pretty easy to tame. Try a unique food, he like very much but will not get from food mixture as treat. You can use that treat tame him pretty easily. You need work with him every day for a few weeks at least.
No, don't pick him up. No bird likes being pick up. Step up training is after your bird getting used to you and your hands and taking treat from you without fear. Young bird will learn very fast. The most important thing is building trust.
