Tiki and I are making so much progress!!! :D Sometimes he steps right up on my finger other times he thinks he needs the perch... but thats OK... and he will sit on my knee for a long time muching on a treat or millet... loves being out of his cage and today he actually showed enjoyment over his misting..:p bobing up and down, spreading his wings and such...will allow neck skritches... even played with a bird toy with me .... has buttons on it...and says a word when the button is pressed.. I would press the button and then he would try.... so much fun...

Anyway, since I am limited on space I have been blocking off the living room area with a blanket (like half a door) :) to keep the dogs in the livingroom while I have him out... My little girl just goes and hides, but my male Bandit has been laying right by the blanket so very curious...when Tiki goes back in the cage both have been forgetting... today he just couldn't contain himself and peeked around the blanket... Tiki was on the floor and Bandit wanted in the worst way to get close to him... I am still worried about having them together...I hurried and got Tiki on his perch... Bandit just wouldn't forget it... he wanted to look in the cage, sniffed all over looking for Tiki and so on..... the time has come to make a formal introduction and I'm just not sure how to do it...

I can't put the dogs in another room... and shut the door... Bandit would have a fit.... and I want them to be able to be together always with supervision of course... it is time for Tiki to be able to be in the computer room with me... or anywhere for that matter...

So if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it... I know in the end I just have work at this....

Today was the perfect day and of course I have to go to work... to bad the bills have to be paid... work spoils all the fun... :)

Sorry this was so long!!!

It's great that he sometimes steps up onto your finger, he will soon be stepping up on to your finger all the time, and won't even need the perch! :D Just more and more take away the perch, and use your finger more instead - he will soon get use to it! :) As for your dogs, we have 2 dogs one who doesn't care and the other is just really curious! The one that doesn't care can be in the same room as the birds when they are out she doesn't even give them a second glance, but as for the other one..as soon as she see's them flying she is up and jumping up in the air, so they both are not in the same room when they are out, even though one doesn't bother with the birds, it's mean keeping one in the room and one out! :) Also they are with another family member in another room so they are not one there own! :p I just think dogs are meant to be curious of other pets especially one's that fly!

When we first got mums guide dog, a labrador, she would jump up and snap at the budgie cage! With both our dogs a sharp NO has been enough to get them over the excitement of the birds. I'm not sure how your dogs respond to verbal reprimands like that?

Also when we first got Buffy she would be tethered to her bed and watched like a hawk when the birds were out. This helped immensely in the beginning because the birds were reasonably safe. There's always a risk having dogs and birds around together, but if you supervise and know what body language to look for to know the dogs are over it you can take the right measures to keep everyone safe.

I would suggest not keeping the dogs out of it. They will get jealous. I would let them sniff the cage at first. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats. When the cats looked at the cage Snitch spread her wings and gave the threat signal. They least care now. I would say not to take attention away from the dogs. Share the love. lol Take it slowly. You are doing great. I expect to get my new bird tomorrow. A Lutino I think. I'm all excited.

I am not the greatest one to give advice on this as I have a cockatiel thats in love with my dog he seems to think she is his mate and would like nothing more then to spend all his days with her she just lies on the couch and he sits beside her singing to her and trying to preen her fur they even sit together side by side under the babies high chair waiting for her to drop food :p she is great with him although she does wish he would go away if anything she runs away if he becomes to much for her and of course he is close behind on her heels following her ...lol

My dog Lucky has jumps up on Georges cage I tell him no then he just sulks in the corner. The cage is quite sturdy so there is no damage done. I would not let them out together I wouldn`t trust my dog. Maybe in time things will get better, I have dog time and teil time I try to make sure neither of them miss out on my wonderful company.:)

Isn't it wonderful the progress that you have made with Tiki? Just look back a couple of weeks and remember what it was like then, you thought you would never get to this stage. I think once they start to trust you, they come on in leaps and bounds. As for your dogs, I can't give you advice on them, I don't have a dog. Keep up the good work with Tiki though, you sound like you are really having fun with him now instead of worrying about if he is going to hurt himself. lol.

Thanks everyone for the great comments... I have had Tiki a month, you would think they wouldn't care anymore... and Buffie doesn't she just hides... but for some reason yesterday was the day that Bandit actually seemed to notice Tiki.... even tho he has been on guard everyday since I brought him home... kind of funny .... we will get there... both dogs know their commands... whether they chose to listen is another thing.. :) I have tho't of putting Tiki in his carrier and just setting it on the floor and let them sniff each other... that way they can get close to him and not hurt him... that is if I can get Tiki in the carrier... He doesn't seem to be alarmed about the dogs at all...

I really wanted to work with Tiki to get him comfortable with me without interference from the dogs... we have gotten to that point... so now its time for the dogs to realize Tiki is really part of the family... :)

Again thanks... isn't it fun to have animals and birds... I am having a great time... was so fun when Tiki actually played with me today when we were playing with the toy that talks...

When we first got Earl and Little Bill, both our dogs were curious of their cage, but Ruby the youngest couldn't help but jump up. Then when we started to put the birds cage in the window so they could look outside, the sofa is infront of the window so the dogs can climb up to the window, also the window has a massive window sill, so the birds cage can be placed on and the dogs can stand right by them. Anyway...Tilly doesn't care to sniff, but Ruby goes right up to Earl and they look at each other. Also Earl trys to bite her nose! That would hurt! But when Earl starts to run up and down and move about in the cage, when Ruby is right up to him, she starts to scream and shake and get really excited, like she would just pounce on him if there were no bars between them! :D But Earl doesn't seem phased at all he just carries on like she isn't even there!! :) He can be so selfish!!

I really enjoyed all the posts about your dogs and birds... today when I let Tiki out, I had no barrier to keep Bandit out... he is so curious.... I sat down put Tiki on my knee like we have been doing, let him chew on his treat... and Bandit was all over trying to sniff Tiki.... just can't seem to figure it out... I didn't let him get close to Tiki face... then I put Tiki back on his place station.... he was climbing around, Bandit is sitting right underneath him... and the phone rings!!!!! Bandit always gets excited when the phone rings... Tiki flew down to the floor... Bandit got scared.... Then Tiki got scared... but finally got Tiki back on my hand and up to his playstation... and all settled down... what a circus.... hopefully one of these days they just won't notice each other any more... :)

Tiki didn't mind having Bandit trying to sniff him at all... he just kept right on nibbling on his treat.... Now Tiki is resting, think he had enough excitment for a while... Me too, for that matter.... :)
