...I would like to build an outdoor aviary for Dooby and Daisy. Don't panic, they're not going to be out there all the time. What I had in mind was to build one on to the side of the house so that the kitchen window is enclosed within the aviary and that would be their way of getting in and out of it. So, I would take them downstairs and they could fly out of the window into their aviary, hopefully, when it is time to come back, I will be able to get them back in through the window. That's the least of the problems at the moment. What I want to know is...can you foresee any problems with this. The aviary will be built properly by my brother (he doesn't know that yet though) and the wood treated etc. What is safe to seal the wood with, can you get proper aviary seal? Anyway, I thought I would ask on here to see if there is anything I haven't thought about that I might need to do or change plans etc.

I've heard of people weather proofing wood with vegetable oil or something. I am extremely un-handy though so i'm not sure how that would work. Make sure you have an access door outside too, with a safety area (so a mini room that has a door also, you go in there, shut the door, then you can safely open the door to the aviary). I can just picture Dooby sitting at the opposite end of the aviary to the window shaking his tail feathers at you while you try to scramble through the window to fetch him.

We don't really get many birds of prey around here, but I intend to make the wire double anyway, just in case a cat decides to come in the garden. Although having said that, I don't think they will be out there when we are in the house anyway, but just in case, I will make sure it's all secure.

I've asked my brother about making it and he seemed to think that I was going to climb through the window as well!! :D:D:D Yes, I will definitely be having a door and yes, there will be a safety door as well.......I wouldn't want to lose the Doobster or Daisy just through lack of security.

It sounds like a great idea! I found a Black poly coated wire. It's attractive and safe. I found it online out of Berkeley, California. Don't know if you could find it there!? I'm sure you could find something like it if you google it. I paid $175. for a hundred foot role 3 feet wide. I have no idea how that translates.

I'd also either dig down a few inches and pour concrete or use some really really small opened wire to put around the base, So no varmints dig through Plus if you use concrete (you can get a bag of Quick mix for fairly cheap you mix it with water in a wheel barrel) it'll more your aviary more sturdy.

It's going on the patio, so there is already concrete there. Nothing can dig through and we are going to drill in to it to hold the "walls" in place. Should I put some sort of liner over the concrete before I put the wood chippings down?

They aren't going to be in there all the time, it's only for playtime and if we are out in the garden, they can come out with us. They will still be living indoors.....it's just a holiday home. LOL.
