Hiya Friends,
Brought home a 5 month old male tiel from a local pet shop. He was very active at the pet shop with his two other mates.Singing, walking back and forth. But upon his arrival to my home and placement in his new cage. He is'nt eating? I've placed millets and his food but nothing. So I'am quessing that he might be home sick and missing his playmates. I have a year old Female African grey in the family room but I'am keeping my baby Tiel in isolation in another room. He's perched on my fingers and he's vocal and Whistles. So should i be worried if he's not eating at this time?

It is not unusual for a 'tiel in a new home not to eat for a day or even two. Just make sure you visit often. Make sure he's aware of where the food and water is. I usually pour water in their dish so they can see it. Do the same with the seed. He will settle in.

HIya,
Got him eating!! Yepper, The trick was I brought him out of his cage and placed him on top of my desk and spread some millets and seeds on top of the desk and he started to nipple on it. I left him there for a few minutes and then placed him on the bottom of his cage with a small dish containing his food and he started to eat. Later on he was eating from his feed tray next to his perch.:)
Thanks in Advance...........Judo

Thank you Guys!!
Yea, He's coming along. He is yellow in color with a slight grayish on his wings. He nips upon retrieving him from his cage but after he steps on my fingers he chills. I've had Parrots that bit harder so he knows that his nips does'nt hurt me. I then had him stepping from one finger to another for about 30 minutes. Today is the second I've had him...I weaned my Female CAG but never again. That took alot of work.:)

Hi Spike,
Yepper I took your advise and spent about 15 min with him. I then placed him back in the cage. He tolerates me alot more! Upon arriving home he started to screach and screach. I asked my son if he's been screaching all day and he said no,only after you arrived home. So i then picked him out of the cage and he stopped and started to clean his feathers on top of my fingers. I then placed him back 15 minutes later and he stopped the screaching and commenced to eat! Ya know the pet store let me have him for almost nothing because they said that he was not tamed and was raised by his parents. Well he is really tamed and loves to be held, My Gain their Loss! He is also eating really good now.. Thanks Ya'all

Sounds like your making great progress with him just one word of advice if he is screeching when you come home don't immediately pick him up wait till he stops cockatiels are very smart and will quickly learn if they screech you will come and get them and with some it becomes a bad habit they will do it constantly till they get what they want, he is screeching because he is calling you some people say a word or a whistle to let them know your there and will be with them shortly sometimes thats enough for them to calm down because they know your alright.

Thanks Laura

Hi Laura,
Thanks for your reply and yepper you are right and I did'nt pick him up immediately. I took a shower then I brought his cage to my office and went online for about half an hour. when his screeching stopped I opened his cage door and said Step Up and he immediately stepped up on my hands. While I was holding him he started dozing off. I also have a Female Congo African Grey Parrot that is almost a year old and She already call's me Papa,LOL!! Oh, The Family members decided to call the new member of our Family; (PUNK):p

Thanks again.......Judo

That's good you already knew not to pick him up right away :p thats great that he dozed off while you were holding him, means he is really comfortable with you and so quickly I think you said you just brought him home you must have the magic touch...LOL How cute is that your grey calls you Papa :p

Sounds like you're handling him perfect. You must have some kind of training background...or may be you have kids!? It's pretty much the same thing.
