Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and I just need help because my 5-month-old cockatiel suddenly stops eating. Last night she's still ok and has the appetite to eat her formula(She's still on formula because she always refuses to eat seeds or pellets but I am always trying every day to have her eat the right food) Before she became like this we have noticed that she can't sleep at night and she is always afraid every time we will leave her in the living room to go to bed so as a result, she is sleepy at daytime. She still has the energy to play and nibble on her toys however we have noticed that her energy is not that high unlike before. I hope someone can help me with this. I can't afford to lose her :( I already lost her partner a month ago and I am still recovering from it.

Okay, a long post. I'm trying to read between the lines here. In regards to sleeping, all birds should be covered by a dark cover over cage when it becomes dark regardless of time of the year. When I go to bed I uncover cages before I leave the room and turn out the light so that they wake up with natural light. I open curtains as I'm on my way to bed. That is their natural biorhythm, just as we have ours. If you leave them in light overnight it will interfere with molting and natural cycles.
A 5 month old tiel should never be fed baby tiel formula on any ongoing situation at her age Not good!. She needs a choice of food. I put small, shallow dishes on bottom of cage. Could be seed, some tiels never take to pellets at all but some might. Buy small parrot seed mix from a reputable dealer. Trill or supermarket brands are the worst possible thing you can present to your bird. When it comes to enrichment pellets, try 1 teaspoon of this mixed in their seed tray and they may or may not eat it. They have their dislikes just like us.
I give my tiels a small amount of mixed frozen veg. Corn they LOVE, peas they will go for, broccoli, maybe, and greens (never lettuce). Carrot in mix won't hurt them but they may not like. Mashed potatoes they will gorge on so only a tiny bit. They seem to love any cooked potato. Tiny bit of chip, baked potato. They love greens but have to be offered over and over again. Don't have to cook them. I put an amount in a pyrex dish, cover with boiling water from jug and leave it to soften for several minutes. They will always have a feed of this. Possibility of foods are wide and varied but know that what you offer is safe for them.
Strangely, as normal protein in wild, they love a bit of meat. Chicken they love (cannibals :p) , mince, all meats on a tiny portion and need. They love cooked egg but only a tiny quantity. Boiled, fried, scrambled etc, but just a small amount.
Hope this helps. Putting your girl on an adult diet is essential to her well-being. Remember that if done right, these tiels can live for some 30 years of so. If done wrong, they will die at an early age.
Remember that they don't eat a lot of anything in one given go, they don't, and shouldn't gorge.
