How can you tell if your bird has mites? I;m new to caged birds and my little recue guy (can't decide if I'm going to call him Smoothie or Bernie) seems to groom a lot and it loks like he may have little white flecks on the outside of his feathers. His feathers always look a little messy, too.

I give him a spritz bath every other day and have offered a shallow bowl for him to bath in (not interested)....I have no idea a little bathing would or would not effect him if he actually does have mites. And if so - then what?

Thanks so much!

The white flecks are part of his feathers. They shed. Indoor birds don't normally get mites and most over the counter treatments are dangerous for birds. He could be moulting, which would make his feathers look really rough.

I agree with Roxy. It sounds to me like you're seeing the new feathers growing in, which is completely natural during a molt. If it is, it should go away once the molt is finished. Could you post some pictures?
