I have a problem with my male plucking feathers from females cheek. It started after about a year when she was changing her feathers and is going on for few months now. She lots almost all feathers from her cheek and while growing a new one, he started to pluck them, to a point where he plucked almost all new feathers and she had a bold spot of the size of fingernail.
He is not very aggressive with it. I would say it happens once, maybe twice a day and sometimes doesn't completely. However, right now I can clearly see my female is missing few feather from her cheek area. I can see that she wants him to preen her, but he never does and just pulls feathers instead.

I know that common solution is to separate them, but the problem is that I never put my tiels in the cage, not even during the night. If I do close them, they get anxious after an hour or so and start pacing around the cage.

Are there any other methods I could try with them?

Well, you SHOULD separate them, try keeping them in different rooms. And you should ALWAYS put the birds away at night, because it’s really dangerous since they can bump into things if they get scared.
