Hey guys,

I have a five year old cinnamon pearl cockatiel named Tilly who has very recently (in the last week) developed a large bump in her abdominal area as well as put on excess weight in other areas. Those are the most concerning issues but she is also excessevly eating and has begun plucking under her left wing. I only noticed these symptoms a few days ago and promptly took her to the vet. The vet and I ruled out egg binding and after a test for fluid buildup and a blood test, she has determined that it is probably a liver problem or reproductive problem. I also think it may be caused by emotional trauma or another organ problem. We have recently gotten a small dog, however the bird and my dog get along fine and I do not let them in the same room unattended or with my bird outside of her cage. I am posting here to see if anyone has any idea what this could be before I decide to have an expensive x-ray done. Since her behavior is normal the vet is fine with me waiting on taking the next medical step. Her blood test results included very high fat content and liver values and other values within normal range. I don't remember when she first started gaining weight, as I dont weigh her every week, but her normal is about 3.2-3.5 ounces and she is now 4.5 (on my scale) and 4.7 on the vets scale. Any help is greatly appreciated!:pearl:

Well, I have a budgie that had a vet visit before we moved to California. Vet said the budgie had a fatty tumor. He felt it first. I saw it later after we got here. He said if they are on an all-seed diet it's like us eating peanut butter only all the time. My budgie is old now, but he convinced me to switch my tiels to a half pellet half seed diet, with plenty of greens mixed in. I also give them rice crispies cereals, sometimes bread and cooked pasta.

I noticed the budgie still has the lump but it's not as big nor does she look as uncomfortable now. This all happened after her mate died.

So if your tiel may have the same issue and need to be on more pellets and people food (muffins, greens, veggies) and drop the seed to one meal a day, gradually.

lump in abdomen

Hi - did the vet say anything about the lump in Tilly's abdomen? Could that be caused by fat? I agree, x-rays are expensive and they are also traumatic for the bird as they usually have to be put under anesthesia for that. I hope your little bird will be okay.

Yes, she said it could be caused by fat and could be a big fat deposit there. The issue is not getting rid of the fat but why she developed t in the first place. She has been a healthy weight her whole life up until just recently, and so the vet says the fat is a secondary problem, likely a symptom of something else.

Thank you! Tilly is not eating seed as her main diet, she eats pellets and has seed as a treat. It could definitely be a fatty tumor and I will ask my vet about that, howver the bigger issue is if it is a fatty tumor, what caused her to make it? Lipomas are usually a symptom of something else, like a liver or thyroid proeblem. :cinnamon pearl::cinnamon::lutino::wf lutino:
