One of my hens, Leda, had a night episode and lost her largest primaries. The feathers were complete when i found them and in the past four months, she has not grown them back. She can still get air and fly, although it makes her very tired and she always pants and holds her wing as if it hurts her. Is there any explanation for this? I would hate to feel like she will never fly properly again.

Hi Art,

I agree that you should probably have an avian vet check out the feathers to make sure nothing else is going on. However, I have heard of birds not being able to grow feathers properly after an accident and having their flight permanently affected. Your bird may not be able to fly anymore, but that doesn't mean she can't still live a full life. I would just make sure there are plenty of climbing options and opportunities for exercise and foraging.

All the best,
Amy
