I got my tiel two weeks ago and sometimes he randomly starts moving his abdomen up and down. It looks like he’s panting and having trouble breathing. But after a few minutes he starts to breathe/act normally again. It starts while he’s already perched so it’s not triggered by any exercise. I make sure there are no fumes in the house which would restrict his respiratory system. His crest is mostly flattened and he raises his feet up interchangeably. Should I take him to the vet? I’m quite worried.

Does his feathers puff up a little when he does that? If so, that's fairly normale. What about the temperature in your house...is it hot? If at ANY time he seems lethargic and (or) down at the bottom of his cage then by all means, get him to a vet ASAP!

So, my boys, Sifl and Ollie do that too. They're ~6 months old now. It sounds like sudden panting all of a sudden but it's part of their chortle routine. It's them imitating my wife brushing her teeth in the morning. They're imitating the sound. She used to have a whole morning routine with our tiel Baby where he would come down from his sleeping perch in the morning and went all dancy dance and scraped his beak on the perch and started bobbing his head while she brushed her teeth. He had to brush his "toof" too. Can it be he's just imitating some sound? Is there some singing involved around it?
