Hi there,

I have an eighteen year old cockatiel. He's still healthy, but the last couple molts, he's grown a down feather on the side of his rump with a ridiculously long tendril. I have a picture of it below. I had to cut it off because it would float around and scare him. I'm just wondering if this sudden growth is something that I should be concerned about? I mean, that feather isn't getting told to stop growing.

Has anyone else ever seen or heard of this happening?

It would be good to have a vet check him out, because there are disease conditions that can make down feathers overgrow. I think liver disease can do it, but I'm not completely sure. Liver disease can make the beak overgrow too.
