Hello, I am thinking about getting a cockatiel since I absolutely love the birds and wish for a companion pet. However, I go to school and do extracurricular activities most days. I would usually have 4 to 5 hours for my bird (more on weekends), but 1 or 2 days a week I will be gone for 11 hours. Is it reasonable to get a cockatiel, and will they be alright with this? I want to make sure I am giving the bird a great home, and I would appreciate your advice!

While that's a pretty long stretch especially if it's a young bird, it could be done providing it has PLENTY of toys and food & water to keep it occupied. I might also suggest if your going to be gone a lot, you might think about getting it a companion tiel to keep it company.

Hi, Sloth. My name is Greg. I rescued 2 tiels in 1992. I was, like yourself, young and in school (patron celebrating 30th birthday this month.)/work, etc. They had one another and they seemed (in fact, I know!) they enjoyed the company and textures, etc, of "Nik Jr. (Blues Clues, Dora, Max and Ruby, in particular). They (cockatiels) require much of your time, much as a child. Being a priest (was not when i got them), I do not take vacations. However, back in the 90's, I had a very good relationship with their vet, and his nurse that lived behind the office boarded them for 2, 2, and 3 days when I was in grad, school. I mention this, as you sound much younger than myself, that YOU too may establish a good relationship with a vet and/or tech/nurse, whom you trust implicitly, that may board your tiels for the eventualality that you should need to leave. They require so much attention. They are very social. They will love you, as you love them. Please, be prepared that you may have these "kids" for a very long time. Definitely not a 'fad," or whim. I wish you many years of a wonderful, meaningful relationship with YOUR kids - these incredible, docile little animals. Be prepared for much. Peace and all good, Greg, SJ
