hey,in about two months
i will be purchasing my first pet bird.
iam so excited. but i really
don't know which bird i want a cockatiel
or parakeet i have been struggling with this
for a long time now. i like the size of the cockatiel
and and it's ability to be an nice companion bird.
and it looks nice. and i would only want one bird,so i was lookin
at a cockatiel.and with a parakeet they are best in pairs,and i don't
know if i can tame them since they come from the petstore
and if iam getting a cockatiel it is all ready hand raised and tamed
it's only 6 months at petsmart.but sometimes people keep one
parakeet and are fine and they bond so well together.and buying
the cage for da room is not a problem or any other supplies. iam so
confused! any help possible is appreciated.

If only getting one, then I recommend the cockatiel.
A tiel would be just as happy on its own with you for a companion as long as you were able to spend time with it.
I think you may happier with it as you like the size already. Plus they have the ability to mimic whistles.
I love my budgies and am anxious to get a tiel.

If there is no way you could get two, I would recommend a cockatiel! :D
They are such good birds, and are ok on their own! If you have the time in the day to spend as much time as you can then a cockatiel would be fine. But if you are out to work etc. Then two parakeets or cockatiels would be better, becauase they keep each other company and won't get lonely or bored on their own! :D

I couldn't choose between them. Both tiels and budgies are really easy to tame and make great companion birds. :) Please look for an option other than a pet store to buy your feathered friend from though. There are breeders of both species almost everywhere because they're so popular.

I have to agree with Spike, I would look in your area for a breeder who could sell you a hand raised cockatiel. Believe me the benefit to you and the bird would be great. People sometimes assume the cost from the breeder would be higher, that is not what I have found. I sometimes have found the breeders to actually be less expensive, and the birds to be healthier and already tame. Since hand raised are used to into acting with people it allows you to bond with your new lovely bird so much sooner. Just my way of thinking, each petstore however is obviously different and that plays a major role in the type of bird you will purchase. The decision should also be based on the type of relationship you are looking for, both budgies and cockatiels are wonderful companions, however I have found that cockatiels truly need the interaction with you on a daily basis to be happy and content. So if you want a bird that will want to be sitting on your shoulder and especially on your computer than a tiel is right for you. If you purchase a baby tiel from a breeder, a good breeder will allow you to visit the babies before they are old enough to leave and you can certainly get to know the bird better before choosing, unlike the petstores. cathy

I have found this to be true of all breeders i have visited. :D A good breeder puts time and effort into working and playing with each individual baby. Even if a large chain pet store is selling a bird as "hand reared" it has more than likely not been touched since it arrived in the store, not to mention that many pet shops source their birds from bird mills where the babies are crop fed and reared and weaned as quickly as possible with minimum time and effort. It's all about a profit in a pet store.

I agree as well, the pet stores around here charge twice as much for a cockatiel then most breeders do, it also depends on the breeder when I got Lee he was $85.00 and I was looking on another breeders site and she had one, same mutation as Lee and she wanted 175.00

Sophia, 'da' is slang for 'the' and is also used in smses. :)

Screech cost me R290 (AU $38) whereas Blizzard from a bigger pet store was R70 (AU $9). Don't forget that the Rand is a lot weaker than the dollar though. Lol. Oh and the cage cost me R450 (AU $59). :D

WOAH!! Now that is cheap!! I want a tiel for $9. I think the cheapest i've seen them is $15 at the annual bird sale put on by the bird club here. They were babies that weren't good enough for the breeding stock that the breeders were after.

ok iy you allready have a cage what is the measurements if not make sure it is big enough length width hight and most important bar spacing a tiel cage would be bad for a budgie as the bar spacing is to big the bigger the cage the better
