I bought my cockatiel from a pet shop I wasn't going to at first but I fell in love with one that they had there.I was just wondering how to get him/her to eat other foods .They had her/him on just seeds when I visitedwacko.I put pellets in the cage and seeds and a bowl with both and he/she is only picking out seeds!

Oh and the seeds where just plain budgie seeds.

If your cockatiel is only use to eating seeds and budgies seeds at that it might take some time to get him/her use to other foods, patience is the key and offereing them daily even if there not eaten eventually s/he will try them and you will be able to see which ones s/he likes best, I offer a small amount of seeds daily and then have pellets in the cage when there done there seeds they move on to the pellets it took some time for some of them to come around but eventually they tried them and found out they liked them, have you tried offering other foods? carrots, corn and parsley are big favourites in my house.

I got my birds to eat veggies. I started with corn that I just put in a bowl and then sprinkled seed on top and throughout. For the first while, my two only ate the seeds... but eventually they tried the corn and they love it. I'm using the same technique with other veggies. As for pellets, I mixed seeds and pellets in a dish and they eventually realized that it was food and good to boot. Now I don't have to mix the pellets with seeds. They will actually choose to eat from the pellet dish. Charlie (8 months) took to the pellets really quickly but Jasper (1 year +) was more set in his ways and it took him maybe a month before he started eating them.

I also find that if I want Dooby to try something new, if I pretend to eat it, he wants it!! He'll try anything as long as I try it first.

It's good to offer the foods in different ways as well. Like with carrots you can try shredded,chopped,cooked, mashed ect. Just make sure the cooked foods are not to hot.

Being patient is the most important, just keep trying the new food, seeds, veggies. It will normally take them a few times to get use to the look of it. But if they are anything like my Earl, the cheekiest and nosiest cockatiel ever, it won't take them that long to try the new food! Good Luck!
