I've been reading up on DYI toys, and I'd love to use just the 100 packs of supermarket straws to make toys for my feathered children. But I'm a little concerned about what happens after they shred the straws, what are the possibilities of them swallowing the plastic? And if by accident they do, how can I fix it/how serious would it be?
Just generally, would it be a good idea to use straws?

Also, while I'm here, what's everyone's take on coloured paper? Would the ink be poisonous?

I use straws and all my birds really like them. I would just supervise them vigilantly and take them away if any of them appears to be injesting them. I have not seen or heard of any tiels doing this, but with everything, you just have to be careful. :)

My tiel LOVES straws :) I twist them into each other so they make rings and put these rings on her perches. She loves chewing on them, but once they begin to become damaged get rid of them because that's when the most risk of them injesting is possible.

Straws are fine..my birds love them. I'm not sure about the colored paper though..it depends on what the ink is made of.

Thanks for the comments everyone :) I was also considering using cigarette filters, like the ones that come without the cigarette attached? I think my tiels would have a blast shredding them up but i don't know how healthy it'd be for them either
