water should I give to Screech and how often? She's sick, and doesn't want to drink though she is eating. I have a syringe marked in millimetres that I'm using to give her water, though I don't know how much. I can't get her to an avian vet without an appointment and he's fully booked, but a friend who breeds birds has given me an antibiotic for her. Please cross fingers that she feels better soon. I'm really worried about her. :(

I really hope she gets better!! Can you get an appointment with the avian vet as an emergency? Or in the next few days? Cockatiels drink up to about 10ml per day. If she's into vegetables at all you could try offering her iceberg lettuce to nibble on for water.

Thanks Bea. Unfortunately SA vets don't work like that. She'd have to be on the brink of death and then they'd want to see the money first. Admittedly not all of them are like that, but when my dogs were poisoned the vet wanted a R1000 non-refundable deposit to do anything. Money isn't an issue where my animals are concerned, but it bugs me like you wouldn't believe.

Screech seems to be feeling a bit better. I'm about to give her some more water, and my friend is going to give me the antibiotic tomorrow so my mom can watch her while I'm at work. I'm not too worried now that I've seen her and watched her for the evening, but in future I'm going to trust my instincts when they say something isn't right. Oh, and she still won't touch anything except seeds (she's as stubborn as I am, but at least I like my veggies:rolleyes:). I'll keep you posted.

Hello all. Screech says thanks for all your get well wishes. She is feeling much better. It was a general viral infection. I called the vet and asked if I could give her the antibiotic, describing her symptoms etc, and they said it was fine. She's almost back to normal, just a little bit miserable, but it's better than alot miserable. Phew! One storm weathered.

Hello there. She's still not totally right, and she's sleeping a lot more than usual, but she is getting better. The little horror took years off my life with this lot. If she's not totally right by the end of tomorrow, she's going to the vet. :p
Thanks for the concern, it's much appreciated.
