I've been lurking on this site for about a month now. My family owns 3 budgies and when I started reading here about cockatiels, I knew I wanted one!

I have a cinnamon pearl baby on reserve with a breeder and he/she will be ready in about three weeks. My sons have already named it Kiwi and are so excited!

Quick question regarding the cinnamon pearl mutation as it pertains to males. I understand that they will lose their pearling after the 1st or 2nd molt. What color remains?

Anyhow, I really enjoy reading about how all of your lives have been enriched by your birds and I can't wait to bring Kiwi home!

Thanks,
Dawn

Hi there welcome to the forum, congrats on your new baby hopefully the weeks will fly by and he/she will be home, if your cinnamon pearl where to be a male he would lose his pearls after he starts molting sometimes it takes a few molts to lose them, then he would look like a cinnamon.
Ask your breeder what mutations the parents are with cinnamon and pearl they are sex linked and its possible to tell what the gender is with the baby by the mutation of the parents.

Welcome to the forums! :D

Like Laura said, a cinnamon pearl male will look like just a cinnamon after the first moult:

(the one on the left, right is a cinnamon female)

I can't wait to see little baby Kiwi in a few weeks time. :D Laura's idea of asking for the parents mutations is a good one, then we can tell you right away if you've got a girl or an unknown.

Thanks for all of your words of welcome and encouragement.

Allen: yes, Kiwi is being hand-fed so I expect he/she will be tame and social. That was the reason I went with a breeder. I've had a hard time socializing the three budgies I purchased from the pet store.

Laura: I've read in other posts where you've said in other posts that budgies are bullies. How do you suggest introducing the new addition, after a quarantine period, of course?

Budgies for there small size can be little bullies, I only have one budgie Sparkle and she is allowed out with the tiels but only if I am there to supervise she has never tried to hurt one of the tiels but she can be bossy, I watched her go into the tiels cage to eat out of there dish and she wouldn't let anyone near her including me Ollie and Georgie kept going into the cage to get her to leave and she would start screaming at them and Ollie the big baby went running she does seem to like Ollie somewhat though she follows him around everywhere when she is out and it drives him crazy.
Some people on here have tiels and budgies that get along well but for the most part they should not be left unsupervised.
I think its all a personal choice how you introduce them some people put there cages side by side so they can hear each other and get use to each other before there introduced out of the cage, and other people just introduce them right away when the quarantine period is over.
