I've been letting Ergo out of his cage and he seems to be a bit more comfortable being in my room now. He's about 7 months old now. The thing is, when he flies around or even when he just scurries across my bed, he poos EVERYWHERE. I try to watch him vigilantly, but I've caught myself stepping in unnoticed bits of poo. And when he's sitting in one spot on the wooden side of my bed he always does really BIG ones (gah).

What would you guys recommend I use to get the stains out of my carpet and sheets? I figured it wouldn't be much of a problem at first, but while I walk around cleaning them up as soon as I notice them, the stains just seem to accumulate. I've got about 3 on my bed and about 5 or 6 on my carpet at the moment. I heard they were meant to be dry, but Ergo's are not. They're nice and wet

Also, I've heard that it's possible to potty train tiels, but decided against it because I've also read that it's likely to have some negative effects. Is there something else I can do to prevent him from pooing all over the place without actually teaching him to poo on command?

Sorry to hear. Tiels ussually poo every 15-20 minutes and it shouldn't be overly huge. It also shouldn't be wet all the time- if they eat alot of veggies, etc it will be sometimes. It should look like a little ball and you should be able to just pick it up with a paper towel. If they are "wet" or you smudged it then you can just wash the sheets or whatever it is. On the carpet hot water and a little scrub takes it out just fine. I don't know where you read that potty training tiels has negative side effects but I don't see how. I HAD to potty train Baby while she was having her eggs last year since her poos WERE HUGE and impossible to easily clean. She is still potty trained now. Ziggy is not since he seems to only like to go in his cage. When they are out they give me sure signs that they want to go to the bathroom-watch their body language- With Baby I tell her up, put her over a napkin, garbage, wherever we are and say POOP. Then she goes. She will go if I am not paying attention to her but if I take her over something she will wait until I say it. It's not exactly pooping on command, she just knows that she has to be over something to do it. Whenever they are with me I have a papertowel I keep with us and that's it. No poo everywhere.

I put an Old sheet over my daughters bed ( thats where the 8 newest tiels are and they're confined to that room)

for my bed for when the Quaker is on it I also put a old sheet over my bed

I've got 2 towels layed over the back of the couch - because Baby and Nibbles and the quaker love to sit there and watch traffic, specially our quaker after a bath

then I just wash them all when they're too nasty

but from them sittin on the edge of my couch they have made a mess of my wooden/Glass end table

but I just took a rag and got it wet with hot water and washed the wood off really good, then cleaned the glass and dried it all up

for carpets I've heard Apple Cider Vinagar is great in Carpet cleaners - so i'm sure you could make your own spot remover , just a spray bottle with it and water in it and srpay it on the carpet where their is stains and wipe up with a rag

I find that a cloth and water gets the stains out easily. Waiting until the poop dries can also be a good idea, because then they'll just lift away and shouldn't leave a mark.

Thanks so much for your advice, everyone. I've tried a cloth and water before, but these really seem to STICK in there. It must be the material of my carpet. Nevertheless, I'm not disheartened. Having my baby roam free is worth it

Hope you get the stains out. Earl (my cockatiel) flies onto his cage when he needs to poo. But once in a while he forgets and normally does it on me

If it's really bugging you and you want to put the time in to train Ergo to use it, then you can buy a flight suit. They're like a little birdy nappy that doubles as a harness. I don't like to use them all the time, but i know some people do and providing they took the time to introduce the suit slowly and properly, their birds don't mind wearing them around the house.

I've heard they can get over trained and refuse to go except on command or in a certain spot - which would be a problem if there was no one to say the magic word or the spot was out of reach.

I have heard that to Bea thats why I never tried to do it, I would hate to think if I wasn't home and they were waiting for the command they wouldn't go I imagine that would be uncomfortable, I guess it works for some but I am getting use to getting pooped on
Georgie is some what trained...lol she will not poop on us not by our doing I guess she just doesn't like it she will scoot her butt over if she is on us and drop it on the floor....hehe the breeder taught her that when she was young she would say to Georgie don't poop on mommy and I guess it just stuck with her

OH NO!!! She isn't like that at all. She'll still go by herself without a problem. It's just when I want her to go over a papertowel or something she knows to do it.

Gracie is toilet trained. First time she needed to do a poo when she was on me, she climbed down my chest, walked across the chair and pooped off the edge, i thought it was hilarious. She always makes an effort not to go on me.

Yup same with Baby. I like it alot acctually. When I see her make her move I just pick her up, put her over the spot and say poop but like I said, it won't stop her from going on her own when I'm not around- she's just well mannered..a little anyway..lol
