Hay/alfalfa/etc

So, as I've mentioned, I've got gerbils. Well, my gerbils love hay. All sorts of hay. Timmothy, barley, alfalfa, and grass hay. Could I give it to the birds? And how would I? Like a few long pieces to play with, or braid some pieces together.... or just jump a handful in the bottom of the cage?

I have to look up safe hay/grass for the tiels- you could make toys (braiding it is a good idea)for chewing but don't provide it loose since they will try and use it for nesting. That's if you don't want to breed. I'll try and find something on it. BRB

EDIT: ok- from what I found Western Timothy Hay, Orchard Grass, Alfalfa are safe.
I agree with Aly I wouldn't put any in the bottom of the cage they will use that for nesting but like she said thats just if you don't want to breed them ;)
They don't have a nest box... they'd still try and nest with it? I put a paper towel in there for them, and they didn't appreciate it.

Very much so. They really don't need a box although if you are breeding it's recommended.

Yes they will even with the paper towel they will shred that and use it as nesting material
Braiding some to make shreddy toys sounds like a great idea! :D I bet they would love it.
Well, Erics' aunt has a love bird that used to rip up napkins and stuff them under his wings... so I though I'd give mine a paper towel. They seriously seemed appalled by the idea. Not even Birdie had an interest in it- and she's had at least one clutch before.

Love birds are quite different from tiels. From what I know love birds enjoy a nice dark corner with soft material. Tiels just think BREEDING. Mine like to play with paper though.
Ah... well... :p Erics mom has a love bird (and a tiel) and the love bird does nothing but hump his little plastic bird. Actually- her tiel humps his food dish too.... hes' AT LEAST 22.

And then mine like bells- but pretty much thats it! lol
