Hi all, I feel awful for this happening, but my 6yo cockatiel, Oscar, has gout and kidney issues now. He'd had a limp for a bit, at first I thought it was just a sprain or splinter but after it had worsened recently and I noticed swelling paired with lethargy, I took him to the vet. The blood results came in, and they said he has gout and some sort of kidney issue, and that he might not make it past six months. I don't know what to do, I'm absolutely devastated. Oscar is like family to me. Is there any way I can help him? I'm willing to do anything that could extend or improve his quality of life. I just feel so terrible for not doing anything sooner.

hey, so sorry this is happening to you and oscar please know that what happened to oscar is not your fault at all diseases are hard to spot in birds, it's all right, you tried your best and got him help as soon as you realised. for now, try spending some quiet time with him and follow the vet's advice and instructions. i've only read about gout in birds and how it can be related to their diets, but i'm not sure. i would recommend basing your research online on what the vet specifically told you.

I have heard about giving vitamin A supplements to the bird having kidney issues but i may be wrong and for gout its obvious that you shouldnt give high amino acid containing diets . i have heard vitA is really good for their kidneys so you should give her carrot, orange pepper etc refrain from spinach as it contain oxalic acid which is again bad for kidneys....and at last i feel really sorry for you and your bird having such problem at such a young age as 6 years old breaks my heart but i hope you two get through this and may he live a longer life
