Howdy all,

I have a 19 year old cockatiel whose “voice” has suddenly changed. It was fine a few nights ago and then the next morning is was suddenly quieter and more of a squeak then a chirp. There are also other respiratory issues such as when he sneezes, it's more raspy. Also when he flies around, he obviously pants afterwards. However his panting now sounds more congested like he has a cold. Otherwise his behavior is unchanged. He still preens, naps, wants scratches, et cetera. He doesn't appear lethargic and his appetite as well as droppings are normal.

At first the severity changed over the course of an hour or so; appearing suddenly in the morning but then getting better quickly. So I took a wait-and-see approach. However today when he was getting a bath, he began a very rapid and raspy sneezing. After which his voice was then drastically different and it has not gotten better over the past few hours.

It's proven to be a bit of a challenge to find an aviary in my area. Any advice would be appreciated.

Update: I believe water aggravates the problem. As I mentioned earlier, it was during his bath that he began the sneezing fit that drastically changed his voice. Well, just a few moments ago, he flew to his cage to get a drink of water and, once again, had another raspy sneezing fit.
