My cockatiel gets so excited to go for a fly (we let him out as often as he wants - he rattles the cage when he wants out) that after a few short flies he will do.so many loops without stopping he just crashlands...he is 8 so its not like hes learning to fly....he just goes until he cant. He is always perfectly happy to erch on our shoulders after or whatever when we collect him from wherever he landed but is this normal? We have only had him 6 months but he was never let out of his cage before we got him...

Check his wing feathering to make sure is normal and tail feathering. I have a rescue girl, now 11, 6 months when I acquired her, whose wings were cut back so hard by previous owner that they never grew back normally. Flying is hard for her, and she can only crash land on side of her cage. I've given her a home to live out her time as nobody else would want her as a functioning tiel. I know she's happy with that. Cage open 24/7 as I know she will only fly out through fright. She frightens very easily but has a calm life in my home. My Mollie can crash land in the most unusual places at times due to her seriously bad feathering.
Take your boy to an avian qualified vet who will know if his feathering is not quite right.

Flying is something that even Parrots have to work at! Until a Baby Parrot has the muscle strength and feather growth on its wings and tail feathers to support flight. Even after that, they have a ton more to learn.

With luck, whether you are working with an Adult that has never learned or a baby, there is much you can do to help. You must feed him healthy food. I have attached a chart for you.

Hi Vivaan,
I have a feeling that you may have been on a tiel talk site I was on some 10 years(ish) ago or so. The spelling of your name strikes a memory (of course I may be wrong ). We had a thing at Xmas time when we sent Xmas cards around the world to those who participated.
My Mollie is now 11 years old. No character other than what she is but knows and misses me when not here.
Found her in a pet shop when I was looking for toys. I asked for her to be brought down late winter time meant that she wasn't a new baby. She could not fly and was terrified of people...still is. They were trying to sell her as a tame again but given my experience, knew couldn't be farther from the truth. She is my 6 inches of separation. More to strangers.
Her wings were cut back soooo hard by the previous owners that she could not fly. Her wing feathers never grew out properly ever again. She is a yellow tiel but unusually, had red eyes when I rescued her (cost me some of course). I knew, as a long time tiel owner, that nobody would love her as I have. She gets to live out her life in her very quiet way until she, or I die. Never know!
Strange thing is, when I thought she didn't connect to me, took Mum away for about 9 days along with others. As carer was a tiel owner, said that she didn't make a peep of a noise nor leave her cage. But as soon as I walked in the door, she actually flew around for first time and screamed for me. She loves me which is as much as I would like and love her for.
My 6 inches of separation girl. She gets me and I totally get her and her boundaries.
