I have beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) growing outside my house. The wild birds love it, and so do my chickens and ducks. So I was wondering if I could put some in my cockatiel's cage for him to perch on and eat the berries. Would this be okay?
I found it very difficult to find any info on this particular berry being safe or toxic to cockatiels. I did find this website that lists it as non-toxic and safe to feed in moderation, but that's the only info I could find on it in relation to cockatiels.
Thank you! I've been searching for something that Squill will eat. He's extremely picky, but I thought since wild birds seem to love those berries so much, he might too.
A good way to find out about the toxicity of any plant is to google its Latin name along with the word toxicity. Google reports that the berry is nontoxic but has a somewhat medicinal taste, so some humans don't like it. On the other hand, some people make jelly out of it lol. Here are a couple of links:
We have two beautyberries and I have never felt sure enough too give too my domesticated birds however mine sometimes will go for oranges especially the white inside of the skin.
