Since I got 0 response from yesterdays post with pictures, MAYBE I'll get some form of an answer to this one. If you look at the parents photos I posted yesterday, my question is: WHY would two of the three babies have a yellow crest coming from WHITEFACE parents? Would this be a recessive gene from a parent? The first photo is for sure a keeper as we wanted whiteface chicks not one's with yellow crests.

A friend of mine said that the chicks look to be cinnamon because of the brownish feathers, and that the parents might be split to pastel face in order for the two to have yellow crests. When the faces are fully feathered in, it will be easier to tell though.

Thank you very much for answering this post. This is the first clutch we,ve had that were just not real sure what we will get. I'll admit, I jumped the gun and just assumed the chicks would look like either of the parents but this looks like a case of don't forget the possible hidden recessive gene.

Yeah, no worries! 😉 I love the mutations of your cockatiels! I've always loved whitefaces and have always wanted some, but it seems that they are hard to find from where I am. I was shocked to see that you got chicks with yellow crests from this pair, too. I'm always curious if my birds will have hidden genes as well, but so far nothing.

Misstiel, Here is a picture of Auzzie taken 5 minutes ago! She is the mother of the three babies. By this time NEXT week we should know pretty much what those two with yellow crests will look like and I'll for sure post updates! I guess it's possible that yellow could molt out but I really doubt it at this point.

Thanks for your comments. She's always been one of my favorites because she is very affectionate. Buzz and I also bonded not long after we got him. So this split means that one of Buzz's parents had cinnamon colors?
