Has anyone seen 'tiels do a courting Dance? I have a male 'tiel that is always trying to romance another guy's hen. I sat down at my desk a few minutes ago and watched as he shifted his weight from onefoot to the other and they did a little sideways hop. He wasn't singing to her (yet) but he continued this little dance kind of making slow circles as he stepped. Then he started to drum on the surface they where standing on (the top of a wooden crate). She seemed to be responding. Still he wasn't singing. As soon as he started THAT her male positioned himself between them. This crate is a new addition in the aviary so I haven't witnessed this before and I wonder if this is a behaviour they would exibit in nature? I bet Bea knows.

She was leaning forward but not quite with her butt in the air. She has been bonded to her male for 5 years and she would not be a good match for Auzzie. He is a Whiteface pearl. She is a regular Cinnamon. I think I'm going to have to take the bonded pair out of the aviary and give him a chance to choose one of the perfectly lovely Whiteface hens. Both are Cinnamon Whiteface but one of them is also a pearl. I have a preference but I will let him decide.

 What kind of tiels do you think i have here?

......ok fine, yes, i do know. That sounds like Bailee's silent sexy dance which usually comes before his normal singing, which usually comes before him losing his head and belting out whistles at the top of his lungs.

It would be the sort of behaviour that males would exhibit in the wild. The crate could have a nest-like appeal to it, and so the male was trying to say to the female "hey gorgeous, look what i found...wanna make some babies?" :p

Thank You Bea. I imagine the kind of 'tiels you have would be happy and healthy!!! Being an Aussie I figured you would have the first hand knowlege. The crate is a shallow bulb box. I hung it on the side with coop cups in it for treats so it only comes away from the wire by about 6 inches if that. and it extends up a couple of feet. It is so far from a nest box I figured I would be safe. I'll have my boyfriend take a pic and e-mail it to me so I can post it. That seems to be the only way I can get it done.
